By April 2016, a top-rated bus operator will be making just over $26 an hour.

"We recommended this settlement to the members because we felt we were exactly where we would have been if we had taken this dispute to arbitration last November," said ATU Local 1587 President Ray Doyle.

"We fought for what we believed in and we won," said Doyle to a cheering room of Miller workers when he announced the vote result.

"Every day of this strike beyond November 2nd, when we first proposed arbitration, is due to York Region Chairman Bill Fisch's vindictive rejection of a rational solution, which was neutral arbitration. He wanted to punish workers who had the temerity to question his view of what transit workers should be paid."

Fisch, who is Canada's highest-paid municipal politician, at over $250,000 a year in salary and benefits, repeatedly refused to consider neutral arbitration as a means to settle the strike. He falsely claimed throughout the strike that the union had been seeking wage parity with transit workers in the rest of the GTA, who make about seven dollars an hour more than York Region Transit workers.

"We were always very clear that we were not seeking parity with the rest of the GTA," said Doyle. "We simply wanted to keep our heads above water but apparently that was too much for Fisch."

A major remaining issue in the dispute is the fate of 92 striking workers at First Student, which lost the contract with York Region less than two weeks ago. So why is this so hard to settle? There is one simple reason – the presence of private operators that are huge multinational companies answerable to CEO’s outside of Canada. Their profit margin comes first – far ahead of the interests of the people of York Region.

It is time to remove these middlemen that have no concern for the people of this region, and create a truly public transit system. One that is accountable to the public, and run in the interests solely of the public. One where everyone can see that every public dollar goes to improved service, not some profit line reported in another country.

Transit riders, residents and families of operators without work continue to be the unfortunate and unnecessary victims of this situation. The Labour Council calls on York Region Council to do that right thing – cancel the contracts for failure to deliver the service agreed to, and set up a truly public system for Canada’s most dynamic growing region.

The Green Party of Canada in Newmarket-Aurora calls for an end to York Region Transit strike.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt; His death comes only a few short months after leading the New Democratic Party to a historic victory as official opposition in Parliament, including the dynamic breakthrough for the NDP in Quebec. His personal charisma and determination helped win over two million new votes for the party he so ably led.

Jack's legacy includes many years of visionary work on the environment and powerful advocacy for the unique role of cities in Canada's future. As a teacher, City Councillor, and president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, he constantly strived to create solutions for the key challenges of the day. His work on forcing attention to the tragedy of homelessness was just one example of his wisdom and compassion.

Jack Layton was also fiercely loyal to working people and their struggles. From challenging trespass laws on behalf of union picketers in the 1980s, to leading the lengthy filibuster against unjust legislation hitting postal workers this summer, Jack was everywhere to be found supporting the cause of workers across this country.

On behalf of the Executive and members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1587, we offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Most people haven’t focused yet on the upcoming municipal elections, but the jockeying for position is already taking place. Is there a surprise in the level of support for Rob Ford’s simplistic tax cuts message? We know it goes beyond hard-core conservatives to include some union members and residents who feel alienated from City Hall. But we also know what happens when that kind of right-wing populism prevails - the devastation and turmoil of the Mike Harris years were ample proof.

If it is clear what we don’t want, why aren’t more people raising their voices about the kind of city we do want? Has the relentless griping from pundits and wannabe mayors left us with selective amnesia about our past efforts to build a livable city? The Labour Council has been a very strong advocate for the kinds of policies needed for an incredibly complex city. There are no shortcuts or simple answers. This is, after all, Canada’s largest urban centre, an economic powerhouse with the most diverse population in the world.
